The Taoist Art of Kamidoro Tama
Kamidoro tama is founded on the ancient Japanese craft of Dorodango.
Dorodango is an artform that takes the simplest of materials, plain old, ordinary mud, and by taking some time, using some skill and some concentration, transforms it into a beautiful, shiny, perfect (or nearly perfect) sphere. It is carefully formed and polished to a high shine using just everyday dirt and water. It's a strangely compelling idea. By working with attention and care you can turn something basic, something that is usually overlooked, something lower than our feet, into something truly amazing.
Dorodango starts as just a mud ball yet, despite the fact that it contains no paint or lacquer or chemical of any kind, it can be made to shine like a billiard ball and it can have a texture reminiscent of a polished precious jewel. Some dorodango might have a texture that resembles elephant's skin, while another one might resemble a texture of a pine tree. Some dorodango can also have an amazing perfect shape.
The basic process of making dorodango is quite simple. You take mud, and roll it in your hands, making sure it's firm and somehow resembles a sphere. You add dust and keep rolling it. And you keep adding dust and you keep rolling until the sphere won't hold anymore. Then you can gently wrap it in a plastic bag to help wick the moisture from the core. On the next day, you can continue adding dust and rolling your dorodango in your hands.
This process creates layers around the moist core, and could take days or weeks or months to finish.
Kamidoro tama, literally paper-mud spheres, follows the same process for similar results, but we use paper mud to start with.
Because kamidoro tama is a cleaner, less intensive process and because we are able to achieve those similar results quicker we are better able to access the spiritual aspects of connectedness.
While you are creating your kamidoro tama, try to banish unnecessary thoughts, just meditate, and focus only on the process of making something (nearly) perfect out of something as common as water, paper pulp, and talc.
As you keep rolling the paper ball in your hands, liberally coating with powder, the small particles of talc will eventually find their way into the small crevices and cracks on the surface of the kamidoro tama, making the surface smooth. Throughout the process, the kamidoro tama will get several layers of talc and as you continue to add more and more talc, the layers will eventually become firm.
A shine will eventually come, naturally, from the friction of your hands as you roll the ball smooth. The real challenge in kamidoro tama is to achieve a perfectly round and smooth sphere.
Kamidoro tama can be said to be the very symbol of the Earth, and life itself - it can be a way for us to return to our natural environment and become one with the process of creating something perfect and beautiful from something as simple as wet paper pulp and talcum powder. Each time you make a kamidoro tama you to enter into a meditative state that produces a tangible result, for each instant of distraction you experience, your kamidoro tama will show a defect, so the end result will clearly show you your progress.
You will be pleasantly pleased with your progress when you make your second, or third, or fourth kamidoro tama.
Mostly, like life itself, our pursuit for perfection ends with a clumsy, lop-sided ball of nothing important. But, we can still feel serenity, surprise and great joy in the fact that we can make an Objet d'art with nothing special and our bare hands.
