You must think of two things. What content will you have on your site, and secondly, what is your site will look like? And what will the layout of the pages look like, colors, etc. (It is presumed at this time you already know what your site will be on!)

The first thing to consider is that the potential of a website gives you. Even if your site will be an online store, do not think about the site as a Catelogue. The advantages of the web is that your website does not follow a linear format - it is not restrictive like a book. The format of the web means your visitors will be able to tap into your site at any time, and also be able to skip to parts that are of greatest interest to them.

Do not, therefore, define your site as chapters of a book, where following chapters are based on information that has been mentioned in previous. Instead your pages should all be able to present themselves as subjects interest of their own, and have links through other relevant information to your visitors might need!

N must start with a blank sheet of paper - there are millions of websites already there. The first thing you can do the research. See what other people have made - No, you do not copy their ideas, but you try to discover what appeals to you, what you think works well and what you off completely!

A method thinking about designing a new website is to use a process of mind mapping, or to develop a spider diagram.

You start with the main subject in the center - this will be your home page.

First layer -

Next think of the main things that people can expect to find in a site like yours - on a retail site, for example, the first layers may well include the Catelogue as a general heading. Dogs on a site on the first layer may be "races".

Second layer -

You are now able to go further in each of your subjects. A Catelogue for clothes can be divided by men's apparel, clothing children, etc., and dog breeds may now be listed as Gun Dogs, toys, etc. Races

Third layer -

Not all of your menu items first layer may lead to a third layer, but a few. To continue our above example, clothing can now be Chidren divided into boys and girls. The hounds will be distributed in the Retrievers, Spaniels etc.

Playing with your ideas on paper that way you can see where your subjects are best suited. It is possible that some third level pages in the form of two second layer pages - no problem, you can link a page each, and appearing on more than one menu. That's what makes sense for the visitor count!

After placing your site in a schema also makes it easier to see how to link your pages using hyperlinks, ie, but clicking on a word on your site, visitors is taken to another page without going back through menus.

Color scheme, templates, etc.

Your first pages

Now you have the outline of your website, you chose your colors and background, you can begin putting your front page.

Here are some tips:

1. Get a few pages together and get your site up there and published! Maybe you just a few weeks to 7 or 8 months to be indexed by search engines. The major search engines such as Google provide Complete listings only to mature sites. The sooner you get your site published the sooner you will get good rankings in search engines.

2. Do not use the words "under construction".

3. Get advice from other people on your site - good reviews will give you confidence. If your host has a forum you may be able to showcase your new website there to seek advice from others using the same software.
