Metallic ink, UV varnishes, lamination – eco-friendly or unsustainable?

UV varnishes

• Large amount of energy needed for production.
• Cannot be recycled because they can't be de-inked, therefore they are destined for landfill.
• Solvent based varnishes are also harmful to the environment as they emit VOCs.

Alternatives

Vegetable based, soy based and aqueous (water-based) are all more environmentally friendly.
Nevertheless, chemicals are required to wash the machine after the use of any varnishes therefore it is better to avoid varnish altogether if you are concerned about its environmental impact.

 

Metallic Ink

• Contains metallic particles which cannot be recycled.
• When these metallic particles end up in landfill, they leak toxic compounds into the water table.
• They can also be harmful to animals and humans if inhaled or absorbed.

Alternatives

Bespoke finishes can add the extra WOW factor to your CD/DVD packaging without the use of metallic ink; wewow offer embossing and de-bossing which create stunning visual effects.

Lamination

Matt and gloss laminates can be used for effect and are often applied to prevent print cracking on CD/DVD packaging which is going to be creased and folded.

• Laminated packaging cannot be recycled and therefore is destined for landfill.

Alternatives

Bio-degradable laminates are available, although they are still in limited supply and are currently only available on very large quantities.  Bio-degradable materials are also unsuitable for recycling meaning that a card-board packaging product cannot be recycled if it has a bio-degradable laminate applied.
