Different types of painting Brushes

Performing ones own household duties has made America a nation of self-reliant individuals, and one of these duties is painting. Painting has been popularized in American culture by several authors, most famously by Mark Twain in his "Adventures of Tom Sawyer". One cannot forget how Tom, punished with the duty of whitewashing a fence, managed to convince his friends on the supposed joys of the task and got paid for the "privilege " of allowing them to paint instead of him.

Household painting has advanced considerably from those lazy days by the Mississippi that Twain wrote so eloquently about. For example, nowadays, there are different kinds of paint brushes available for different specialized purposes. Since the first major decision you face before embarking on any painting job, you may want to consider the following alternatives and see which one suits your needs.

Trim Brushes
Trim brushes are small brushes used to paint small areas and corners. They are around 2 to 3 inches in width and come equipped with thinner handles to allow for more control . Angled brushes are also used for trim and are basically smaller brushes with angled bristles that allow the painter to reach smaller areas.

China Bristle Brushes
A China Bristle brush is a higher-end brush that allows for a smoother finish and more professional looking paint job. They are especially recommended when using wall stains or oil paints, since this brush holds these mediums well. However, they can be used only with oil-based paints, because it absorbs water and becomes loose and floppy. It does not have the long wearability of polyester and nylon brushes.

Wall Brushes
For large-scale painting, wall brushes are used. They have straight edges and are anywhere from 5 to 6 inches in width. They hold a larger amount of paint for easier covering and come equipped with wider handles for larger strokes.

Angle Sash Brushes
The bristles in an angle sash brush are precisely trimmed at an angle that allows painters to hold the brush more comfortably while painting trim and corners. The brush ends are rounded for a smooth , gradual paint stroke.

Roller Brushes
A roller brush is a cylindrical device with a sponge-like head that is rolled in the paint and then rolled onto the wall. They are recommended for painting walls because they apply the paint evenly. They come equipped with adjustable handles to help reach high areas or ceilings.

Synthetic Brushes
Synthetic brushes are readily available at low prices in a variety of shapes and sizes. They can be used with almost every medium, be it primer, latex or acrylic paint. They are recommended for all kinds of basic painting jobs. Nylon bristles should be used with latex paints, and tapered polyester for all paints, including oil, latex, varnish, lacquers, shellac and marine finishes.
