There are bench machines that can be used in watch repair and service. These are tools that can be set up on benches and used. As they are placed on benches, they are easy to use and handle.
The 350W Upright Drill Press is a useful addition to a watchmaker’s tool kit. It has a powerful 350 watt motor with a 5 speed belt drive. It can easily drill up to a depth of 50 mm. It has a machine table and a stable cast base. It is best suited for high precision drilling jobs. It weighs 19 kg and measures 46 * 36* 23 cm. The Hilka 6” Bench grinder 150 W is a tool that can also double up as a polishing machine apart from being a grinder. It has tough, durable grinding wheels, a rugged dust proof On – Off rocker switch, an induction motor – all inside a metal housing to ensure high quality and endurance. It is designed for lasting long and includes grinding wheels, tool rests, eye shields and wheel guards. The wheel diameter is 150 mm and the wheel width is 16 mm. In this model, Hilka has another variant with a more powerful motor of 30 watts which is meant for heavy duty grinding and polishing operations. The other features are the same as the 150 W version. There are latex finger cots and protectors that are used to protect fingers while doing operations like valeting, applying oils and adding cleaning solutions etc. It can also be used to keep hands clean during watch repair. They are tough and anti static in nature with a textured tip to make it more sensitive. They are a powder free product and can be rolled with a rim for easy fitting. They come in a package of 144 pieces. There is a dispenser in the package and the protectors come in four finger sizes to suit all needs.
Many kinds of polishing kits exist for watches – to suit steel, non ferrous metals, general purpose etc. A general purpose metal polishing kit has material suitable for all metal surfaces like aluminium, brass, copper as well as steel. Using this kit, watch makers can achieve a mirror like polish. This kit includes a sisal polishing mop that cuts hard and fast and hence is found good for first stage mopping operations on steel and non ferrous metal surfaces. A colour stitching mop that comes in the kit has multiple uses and is a first stage polishing accessory when used with a Tripmax brown polishing compound. The most popular Quality finishing mop has 100% cotton discs that ensure a smooth and good polish when used with a Bluemax Blue polishing compound. There are also various polishing compounds that come as part of this kit along with Vienna Lime to clean out residues of polishing compounds, a dust mask and a pair of gloves. Other kits meant for specific metals have compounds and accessories to suit their intended use.
