Why self-publishing?
Self-publishing is where all the writing and illustrations, book design and layout, printing and sales are organized by you! Although you can hire people to help along the way, you do not have a traditional publisher handle all these details and decisions for you.
- Having published a book could give you a wide recognition and praise. However, you still need to promote and sell copies, in most cases, for a royalty payment small, usually no more than 10% of the invoice value of the publisher. If you hit a "best seller" that you could crack sales volume and become rich and famous. You could also win the lottery.
- If you have any ideas for promoting books and feel happy to do the job, self-publishing can be fun. If you make enough sales, you can a traditional publisher or two that you meet.
- Self-publishing gives authors a great deal more control over production and distribution of their books. Should they succeed in selling their book, they also keep the profits!
What do you want?
A book is a book, right? Well yes, but they come in many shapes and sizes, with paper and soft cover, black and white or color and with or without sleeves jackets and fancy. So what your book should look like? The author works in an organization of book printing with a paper stating that they would like a published book, but gives no other details may be met with a plethora of confusing questions.
- For many authors, the answer to some questions may be determined by costs. Produce paperback books in small numbers and the color is not probably limited the most economical option. However, your book style depends on your market, a paperback book may or may not agree. You will need libraries and research libraries to discover what books are competing with yours. Notice of design, coverage, number of pages and approach the object. You get the best results by sticking to standard sizes and materials. But be sure that your book will provide a better value than your competitors.
- When you meet potential printers that you might wish to consider the following points which will affect the final presentation and the cost of your book: the size (which may also affect shipping), the coverage - it will be bound or stapled, binding - will it be "perfect binding", the kind you see in business books or a chapbook with staples through the fold to a small publication. Also cover the design and colors.
- If you have not already written your book is also time for you to consider what an appropriate number of words will be. If you have already written your manuscript, the above items may cause you to increase or reduce your word count.
- In addition to printing, you may like to create an e-book version of your title. Some authors produce only electronic versions, which saves considerably on costs, but you'll still need to examine the pre-production costs such as those discussed below.
The nuts and bolts
Once you have decided on the type of book you want, it's time to start the project. There is much to consider and what you want to help make the process much effective faster and easier.
- Print - you can either print the application or to arrange an offset print run. Each option has its points positive and it really depends on how many books you think you can sell and if you have storage for holding extra books at your fingertips. The last thing you want is the replacement part is full of boxes of unsold books that do not look like they are going anywhere fast! Make your search in finding a printer and not just go to the first option or the nicest person, make sure they are able to print a book of quality and, eventually, store and distribute for you.
- Layout and design - if you're not an artist graph and a writer (there are chances that you are not!), then you will need someone to help with the layout of your book. This involves the establishment of margins and page breaks depending on the size of the book you publish, the layout and making the appearance of plain text as a book. It also includes illustrations of design and perhaps. Most printing companies offer this service, or part thereof, with a charge, or they will be able to give the impression that the specifications of graphic designer can work. Make sure the person who did this to you knows a thing or two about design book or you will lose valuable time and money with printers who are frustrated unable to work with files that you have given them. If you or a friend can provision your own book or partly layout, it will save much time and money.
- Legalities - you'll need a name for your business. The fact that the publishing empire is just you and your cup tea does not mean you can not present a professional front to the world. You will probably operate as a sole proprietorship with reported earnings on your personal tax return, and you can offset some operating costs of the tax. If book sales take off you want to watch forming a corporation.
- Register your publication - every product you need to generate an ISBN and possibly a barcode on the back cover. An ISBN is the International Standard Book Number. The ISBN allows booksellers and libraries Catalog and ordering your book. Do an Internet search to find suitable suppliers ISBN for your country or location.
- The price of your book - once you know how much printing will cost, and you have an idea of how much you sell, you can sort that will charge you for the book. Take a look at what your books and other competitors similar types of books are sold. Typically, a book can be estimated at approximately five times production costs - if you have higher costs, make sure you price your book at least three times the cost.
- Print your book - and make sure at least one other person to make a full proof reading the final manuscript, and submit your work to a service professional editing. Do not be shy to send some manuscripts with handwritten notes added to the front to let people see what all the work a drive of your product. Ask for their comments, also communicate with people highly regarded and request their support for inclusion on the back cover.
Market yourself
Any real marketing of the book will come to you to start brainstorming for good ideas. (See Articles by the same author, How to maximize the profit potential of your e Nonfiction Book How to sell your book on the Internet)
