Why is Fort McHenry in the form of a star?
I have a report that I am at Fort McHenry and wondered why it is in the shape of a star?
Designed by the French Jean Foncin [1] in 1798 and named after James McHenry, a Scottish, Irish immigrant and surgeon-soldier who became Minister of War under the presidency of Washington, Fort McHenry was built after America won independence to defend the important port of Baltimore against future enemy attacks. He was placed on the Locust Point peninsula, which juts opening in the Baltimore Harbor, and was built in the form of a five-pointed star surrounded by a dry moat - a deep wide trench. The gap is used as a shelter from which musketmen could defend the fort of a ground attack. In the case of such an attack on this first line of defense, each point, or bastion, was fortified, so that the invading army would be caught in the crossfire of guns and muskets.
