Outrigger Canoe
History
The traditional PPAO Tonga.
Hawaiiloa, a sailing double canoe built as a replica of the Polynesian canoes traveling.
canoes were originally developed by the Austronesian speaking peoples of the islands of Southeast Asia for sea travel, and have been used to transport these peoples both eastward to Polynesia and New Zealand and West in the Indian Ocean to Madagascar during the Austronesian migration period. Even today mainly among Austronesian groups (Malay peoples, Micronesia, Melanesia and Polynesia) that outrigger canoes are used.
outrigger canoes are also used in some non-Austronesian groups, like the Sinhalese in Sri Lanka where they are known as oruwa and among certain groups of people in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The importance of ethnological this gap has been studied by James Hornell.
When the first ships of Magellan encountered the Chamorros of the Marianas in 1521, Antonio Pigafetta recorded that the Chamorros sailboats "far surpassed Magellan in speed and maneuverability.
The Polynesian Voyaging Society has two double hull sailing canoes, and Hklea Hawaiiloa, and sails between islands in the Pacific using traditional Polynesian navigation without instruments.
The technology has persisted into the modern era. Outrigger canoes can be quite large fishing or transport vessels, and the Philippines, outrigger canoes (called Bangka, or parao balanghai) are often equipped with engines gasoline. The links between the outrigger canoes and sea in the Philippines range across politics, in which the smallest political unit in the country even after the pros Barangay called historical balance Balanga used in the original migration of the first Austronesian peoples through the archipelago and beyond.
use modern sport
canoe racing became a popular sport in the canoe, with many clubs spread worldwide. Outrigger Canoe Racing is the State of Hawaii sport and a sport at school interscholastic high. In Hawaii, entire families participate in summer regattas with age groups from Manini (children as young as 6 with a coxswain adults) and up to 12 years age 60 +.
the big races in Hawai'i include the Molokai Hoe (43 km mi/69 race of men on the island of Molokai to Oahu Cross Channel Kaiwi), Na Wahine O Ke Kai (same race for women) and Queen Liliuokalani Race held near Kona on the island of Hawaii.
Racing outrigger canoes. The boat at the front right, with a narrower hull and smaller body, is a one-person outrigger canoe, or OC1. The other boats are six person canoes or OC6.
Six person outrigger canoes (or OC6) are among the most commonly used for sport; single person canoes (or OC1) are also very common. Two and four person canoes are also sometimes used, and two six person canoes are sometimes rigged together as a catamaran to form a person aged twelve double canoe.
Modern OC6 shells and clusters are often made from glass reinforced plastic. However, some Canoes are made of more traditional materials. In ancient Hawaii, canoes were carved from tree trunks very old koa. These canoes, though rare, are still in use today. The iako are usually made of wood, the ama-iako iako hull and connections are generally made with the rope wrapped and tied in interlocking fashion to reduce the risk of the connection to come completely apart, if the rope breaks.
Modern OC1 shells and clusters are often made from glass reinforced plastic, carbon fiber reinforced plastic, and / or Kevlar canoe to produce a strong yet lightweight. OC1 are often made with rudders operated by foot pedals. More designs are not traditional rudders. OC1 commonly use aluminum iako, with a mechanism for assembly and disassembly of the boat (snaps, large wing nuts, etc.).
