Calluses - To cut or not to Trim
A callus on the heel or the toe can cause a lot of pain for a runner. It can develop a blister even more painful and may limit performance of a runner or simply reduce the pleasure of running. Many riders want to take a razor blade for callus tissue and reduce until the skin is raw. Some rub calluses with a pumice stone to their hand numb and other applications of expensive creams and lotions. But no matter what you do, somehow, always returns the callus.
Callus tissue is an accumulation of dead skin in response to pressure or friction. The medical term for callus is hyperkeratosis (hello - toe - - by - treatment - uh SIS). A callus is actually a bone and a mechanical foot problem, not a skin problem. Foot deformity causes excessive pressure in this region of the shoe or ground. The natural defense mechanism the body will turn on and start building the top layer of the skin in response to excess pressure. This is a protective response of the body in an attempt to prevent the pressure to wear down the layers of the skin and resulting in an open wound. The problem is as long as there is pressure, the body will continue to build the skin. The constant accumulation of dead skin can become excessive and painful.
In runners, The most common places for the accumulation of calluses are on the inside of the heel, the area around the big toe and the ball of the foot. Calluses can appear on top of the toes or between the toes. In these cases, the callus tissue is called maize. The calluses are thickened, dry, scaly, yellow, red, tender and very flakey. Runners are more susceptible to developing calluses due to the amount of stress, pressure and repeated micro-trauma their feet endure.
The first step of treatment is to find the cause of the callus. Do you have a foot deformity? Do you have an onion or a hammer? Any type of deformation that rubs on the shoe will result in the formation of calluses. Do you have abnormal mechanics? For example, pronation. If your feet roll in excess, it is common to have callus development within the heel and big toe. Do you have poorly fitting shoes? Without mechanical deformation or abnormal foot, an ill-fitting shoes can cause friction and irritation. A shoe too tight in the toe area will cause the formation of callus on the little toe and the big toe. If the heel of the shoe is too loose and the heel is slipping, the development of calluses may occur on the back of the heel.
Once the problem is identified, the first step is to treat the cause. This is not always possible. It is not recommended to correct surgically because of an onion, an annoying cal. You should find shoes to accommodate any foot deformities, and ensure that all shoes Race not fit properly. Most people wear shoes that are a half a size too small, make sure that your shoes are good size. Once the problem is identified and either accommodated or eliminated, it is time to direct attention to cal itself. It is not recommended to cut calluses yourself. Very large, hard calluses or calluses with painful nuclei (called plantar keratoses insoluble - IPK) should be cut by a podiatrist. It is not necessary to have all calluses trimmed. A small amount of callus is protective to the skin and bony areas, it is covering. To keep down calluses, try creams with salicylic acid peels or specifically for callus tissue. If you use a pumice stone, use it daily. A monthly aggressive sanding may simply irritate the surrounding tissue and you will most likely not much progress or decrease the thickness of the callus.
Identification of the cause and minimizing the pressure, in combination with the use of pumice and callus reducing cream on a regular basis, you give the best results.
