The Art of Kamidoro Tama and Taoism

            The Taoist purist is completely in tune with nature.  He continually strives not to see things as good or bad, but to seem as they truly are; something that just happen.  The pure Taoist will love the Japanese craft of Dorodango.  It is a basic and fundamental of an art as can be had.  Dipping your hands into mud, and working it into a shiny ball is as simple and natural as breathing.

            Kamidoro tama is just as natural, just as basic, and just as powerful.

            While Dorodango is simply made from the mud of the earth, kamidoro tama is made from wet paper pulp and talcum powder; three of the lowest, under-rated elements around.  Yet they can be made into highly desirable Objets d'Art.

            To make kamidoro tama, literally mean paper-mud sphere.  You begin by creating your paper mud.  The simplest, most natural, way of creating your mud is by unrolling a roll of toilet paper into a large bowl.  Add two or three shaved pieces from a Dove bar of soap (do not add more).  The moisturizing cream in the soap will help the core stay moist.  Pour enough very warm water into the bowl and agitate by hand.  Slowly remove the clumps and clusters, and mixing the soap into the dissolving paper.  Do not rush this part.  You want as much dissolved pulp as you can get.  When your paper takes on the appearance of soupy oatmeal it is ready.

            Scoop up a handful and squeeze it into a ball.  Scoop up another handful and pack a layer around you core ball, squeeze the water out.  Keep scooping, layering and squeezing until you have about a 9cm ball.  Only practice will let you know how much water to squeeze out.  But squeeze out enough that it is not dripping and you still have a hard packed ball.

            Now comes the first hard stage.  Only practice will perfect this.  You must smooth out your ball as much as possible.  Simply rolling it in you hand is not enough.  It may end up looking like a fuzzy head of cauliflower if you do.  The hardest part of this process is to make sure you have enough water left in the inner cores to hold the tama together.  Rolling it around on a hard surface will get most of the oatmeal lumps out of the ball.  The more you do now, the smoother you get it now, the easier the other stages will be.

            Perfection is the goal.  Just like a tree is perfect, so too will your tama be perfect, even if it is not perfectly round and smooth or very shiny.  The real goal is to learn to accept things as they are, not as we want them to be or they should be, but as they are.  This is the fundamental Taoist principle.

            When you are satisfied with the shape of your tama, begin to powder it down with talcum power.  Gentle pat the powder down, adding more and more and keep rolling it on a hard surface.  While this is not physically demanding, it does take skill to keep the ball round and in tact.  When this layer is compacted and smooth, do it again, and again.  Then place the ball in a baggie over night and start the process over the next day of adding talcum powder and rolling.

            The whole paper ball depends on the core being moist and the outer talcum shell slowly wicking moisture from the core.  When the core dries out completely, the tama will crumble.  If your outer talcum shell cracks all is lost, the inner core will dry out, and the shell will crumble.  Unlike Dorodango, your kamidoro tama's inner core can be salvaged and reused.  The inner core can be soaked in water and reused.  When the paper core has absorbed enough water, begin the process of creating hard outer shell.

            Cracks are to be expected.  Lop-sided, lumpy-bumpy balls are to be expected.  Broken and dried out tama are to be expected.  It is part of the process.  It is not good or bad, it just is.  We can learn from our experience and try again.

            When we get it right, we have a perfect Taoist symbol for the earth, for life itself.  We have created something nearly perfect out of some of the most basic elements on earth, we have connected with the Tao, and this is the true power and beauty of kamidoro tama.
