My Secret to a Great Night Sleep

Many people including myself have had a hard time sleeping at one time or another due to a variety of reasons.  Finding out the best solution for a good night sleep took some patience, research, and trial and error, but ultimately, one solution changed everything. 

My brother in law was in the mattress business and during my discussions with him, I realized that there were many people, not just myself, searching for a better, more comfortable sleep. I researched mattress construction, sound machines, over the counter medications, prescription medications, CPAP sleep machines and then, documented the findings.

After all, sleep is the most important element your body needs to repair and keep running properly.
Studies have shown that people that do not get enough quality sleep suffer from depression, weight gain, poor health, poor memory and live a less than optimal life.

There are also different stages of sleep and to get your body to repair itself, you must reach the REM stage where most people spend between 20-25% of their sleep. One physiological study suggests that one purpose of REM sleep is to improve memory storage along with repair and restoration functions.  Some people do not reach this critical stage or not enough is achieved.

If one does not achieve enough quality sleep over a period of time, this is called Insomnia. Disorders related to Insomnia are tension, depression, personality disorders, loss of energy, no sex drive, and inability for body to heal and repair itself properly.

Studies have been done with test subjects showing that if one group is deprived of quality sleep and one group is allowed to have quality sleep then tested with memory tests, the group with better sleep always won.

I myself have tried Ambien and Lunesta and did not like the hangover feeling that was associated with them.  There was also a growing mountain of evidence that these prescription medications could be harmful due to the side effects. Laws have been passed in many states allowing a person driving under the influence of a prescribed sleep medication to be charged with DUI or driving while impaired.  This is scary given the fact that some of the side effects are sleepwalking, sleep talking and having sex while asleep.

My uncle was dying of cancer and I had to take a trip to see him one last time. It was awful.  He was coughing so badly at night that my wife and I barely slept at all.  Then, my Auntie gave me an herbal tablet with Helicidum in it.
