Dimethyl ether organic compounds (CH3OCH3) and ethanol (CH3CH2OH) have the same molecular formula C2H6O and same molecular weight but have different structural formulas. A sample containing both ethanol and dimethyl ether is analyzed by gas chromatography using a flame ionization detector. a) Are the two compounds produce peaks with the same retention time? Explain your answer. b) If the sample has the same concentration of two chemicals, the peaks will occur the same region? Explain your answer. Thank you very much for your help.
a) No, the compounds have different retention times. Assuming that you are using a polar stationary phase, the most polar analyte, in this case ethanol, will have a greater affinity for the stationary phase only slightly less polar ether. Thus, it will be retained for more ethanol and therefore will have a shelf life longer than ether. In addition, ethanol has a boiling point higher than the ether, and is therefore less volatile. It has a low vapor pressure and moves through the column more slowly. b) If you had the same concentration of chemicals at a time, I predicted the area would be similar but not identical. It depends of this detector you use. For GC you commonly use a flame ionization detector (FID). Different chemicals have different responses a FID, and are therefore counted as different domains, regardless of whether the concentration is the same. You must take into account the response factor. Hope this helps
