Smoking and Your Eyes

About 4000 chemicals are introduced into the blood when you smoke cigarettes. These chemicals have been found cause damage to your eyes, especially your macula. Chemicals can cause small blood vessels in the eye to burst through the macula, the cause of your macula cells to die slowly. This damage can eventually cause vision loss.

Macular Degeneration

Age related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of vision loss and blindness in Americans aged 65 and over. AMD is a degeneration of the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision needed for tasks such as reading and driving.

Smoking is the number one factor "modifiable" risk of macular degeneration. A British study published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology in early 2006, found that smoking was directly associated with about 25 percent of AMD cases causing severe vision loss. The study also found that if you live with a smoker, the risk of AMD is doubled.

Apart from the increased risk of macular degeneration, present and even former smokers are not able to take vitamins that contain beta-carotene because of the increased risk of developing lung cancer. In a study conducted by the National Institutes of Health, beta-carotene supplements have been shown to help slow the development of AMD.

Cataracts

A cataract is the clouding of the natural lens of your eye which results in blurred vision. Cigarette smoke has been proven to be a definite risk factor for developing cataracts. It is also related to dose, the more you smoke and how long you smoke, the higher the risk of developing cataracts.

Evidence shows that heavy smokers (15 cigarettes smoked per day or more) have up to three times more likely to develop cataracts than those who do not smoke not. Cigarette smoke appears to increase the risk of cataract by oxidative stress more and more of your natural eye lens. Oxidative stress may be caused by radicals free products by reactions in tobacco smoke. These free radicals can damage proteins directly and the lens fiber cell membrane in the lens. The result is a loss of transparency in the lens of your eye, which produces the impression of looking through a mist of glass or behind a waterfall.

Pterygium

A pterygium is a wedge-shaped piece of abnormal tissue that grows out of your cornea . Surgical removal of this growth takes less than 30 minutes and can be recommended if the pterygium:

• Extends far enough on the cornea to harm your vision
• Causes chronic inflammation and / or irritation
• Interferes with contact lenses

Most ophthalmologists recommend having a pterygium removed before undergoing cataract surgery. However, this depends on seriousness of your growth, and how are your cataracts. Therefore, the final decision varies among patients.
