Favorite Fall Nail Polishes

Activities and Alzheimer's dementia patients

I believe activities are crucial to the well-being. In the last ten years, research has shown that activities play an important role in preventing the progression of dementia. We also know that socialization prevents loneliness, despair and suicidal thoughts.

For several years I directed recreational activities on weekends in a hospital geri-psych. Activities that took place on a weekend especially depended heavily on patients in the unit at that time. All patients had dementia and behavioral disorders that precluded their being able to stay at home until the behavior had been extinguished. Most patients were about unity between three to four weeks, while doctors changed their medications or doses. Some were more alert, more were more physically functional. Some returned home, others returned to a nursing home or admitted to a LTCF for the first time after release.

There are many activities that are appropriate for people with dementia. The only guideline is not not degrade them by making them do activities for children. Instead, show your respect by engaging in hobbies that are similar to children's activities, but suitable for an adult, retaining some qualities that make fun of the activity. Here are a few suggestions for caregivers who have a person with dementia at home.

Puzzles & Games
Try:

easy crosswords and word searches using large aircraft.
puzzles with very large rooms. Images must not be focused on the child try landscapes or pictures of animals instead. Puzzle Floor are good because they usually have large pieces, and there is not too many that can be discouraging. Work on these on a table so you do not get the fight on the ground!
Old favorites like dominoes, card games such as "Go Fish" or "Old Maid" and games company like Candyland and Pollyanna.

Photo Scrapbooking & Activities
Sort photos by theme, subject, type or date. Mix it up when you 've finished so they can be sorted differently next time.
Assemble a collage. Bonding can be fun.
Make an album, paste photos on the pages and writing notes on the memory side of the photo. You can also use a photo album with plastic sleeves.
Label old family photos so you will have this information later.
Reminisce on the development of the photo.

Reading activities
Read aloud or simply look through magazines and books that can lead to discussions. Try:

Find old copies of magazines or life.
Stories from the Bible or the Bible.

Evoking Memory Books
You can find blank memory books in the baby section of a bookstore. This is usually ask questions that prompt discussion. Here are some suggestions:

Activities involving Humor
Watch or listen television comedy, movies and old radio shows like "Who is the first (Abbott and Costello) and" I Love Lucy. "
Start a notebook or an album of humor.
Funny laugh over memories of family (like the time Mom put frozen rolls the table on Thanksgiving).

Housework
Rake leaves.
Fold towels.
Clean windows.
Cut coupons.

Gardening activities
Pull weeds.
planting spring annuals and bulbs in the fall.
Transplant small plants in pots greatest. Have paint cans patient in advance and use them for gifts.

Seasonal decorating
String cranberries and corn.
Making wreaths for doors and window decorations.
Set up decorations and take them down.

Sorting and organizing activities
Sort or organize:

Nails, screws and other hardware.
Nail polish and lipstick, sorting by color, brand or on a scale of 1-10, in order of preference.
Buttons, using muffin tins to sort by color, size or style.
Corners, according to date, value or place of origin.
The pantry, organizing boxes and jars by size, brand, or its contents.
The silverware drawer, rearranging the order of forks, spoons and knives.
Playing cards in the decks of this game, or in combinations within a platform, or by numbers. Tupperware by size or color.
M & M, using muffin tins to sort by color. Choose a color to eat!

And cooking activities in the kitchen
Make salads, ice cream, Jell-O pudding (try a hand blender), no-bake cookies and pies, balls popcorn and other simple recipes.
Wash fresh produce and put into bags.
Grind nuts to use for cooking.
peeling vegetables.
Copy recipes from magazines on maps.
Make a grocery list of items needed for recipes.
Sort revenue and to find images to illustrate.
Empty the dishwasher (use melamine dishes or plastic).
Set the table.
Fold or roll silverware in napkins table.
Assemble the skewers shish with fruit or vegetables (use wood with blunt ends).
