1. What are dentures?
Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth and the tissues that connect those teeth. They can be made of acrylic plastic, porcelain or nylon. They are designed to closely resemble natural gum tissue and teeth. Dentures can replace all the teeth or some of the teeth, called a partial. Partial dentures help prevent other teeth from shifting position.
There are two types of dentures; immediate or conventional. Immediate dentures are made the same day following having all the teeth removed. The immediate denture acts like a Band-Aid to reduce bleeding and protect the tissues after the tooth extraction.
Conventional dentures take longer to make and are ready to be placed in the mouth after 8 to 12 weeks after the gums have healed. Conventional dentures can have a higher long term success rate and better fit than immediate dentures.
2. Who needs dentures?
Dentures are not just for old people. They are for anyone of any age who has lost some or all of their teeth. Tooth loss can have an emotional impact on some people can cause fear and anxiety. Talk to your dentist if you have worries about your dentures.
3. What is the denture process?
The entire denture process lasts about one month. It typically involves 5 or more appointments to complete. A try-in process ensures the proper shape, color and fit of the teeth set in wax. This allows for minor adjustments to get a proper fit and feel.
4. How will my dentures feel?
Dentures may feel awkward and loose when you first receive them. Over time you cheek and tonue muscles will learn to keep them in place. Your speech may also be slightly affected at first, along with some minor soreness in your mouth. You may find yourself salivating more than normal but this will pass with time.
5. When should I remove my dentures?
Take your dentures out every night for at least 8 hours to give your mouth a rest.
What care do my dentures need?
Remove your dentures and brush them with a denture cleanser and specially designed brush that will not scratch your dentures. Do not use boiling water as this may cause your dentures to lose their shape. Soak your dentures overnight in water or denture cleanser.
6. Are there alternatives to dentures?
Dental implants can be an alternative but can be much higher priced than dentures. Implants are artificial tooth roots, made from titanium, that are surgically anchored into your jaw. Not all patients are good candidates for implants so be sure to ask your dentist which treatment is best for you.

2. Eat a well-balanced diet. Good nutrition helps you maintain healthy teeth.
