Printing profit, platinum, from digital negatives - The Concise Guide - Part 6 / 7

Part 6 / 7 - Presentation of the copy Fine.

Staining and engraving.

Tracking is performed with only two watercolors, black smoke and burnt sienna (in tubes), mixed accordingly. Long is an art and there is no magic formula for it. Use a good magnifying glass. Keep a piece of paper close to test the color on it (I confess that I use the same impression that I am on spots, testing the brush along its borders). Mix a little brown with some black. Use a brush very end, almost dry, you do not want too much pigment to make a huge stain on the printout. Stay light and "build-up in intensity. Fundamentally remain lighter than you think.

I find relaxation spots, but many consider it boring. Sometimes I serialize the process, I keep all impressions in front of me and starting with the darkest parts, I put all the shadows, for example, all mid-tones and finally the highlights, adding drops of water to the mixture of watercolor. It is more difficult to burn with a scalpel blackheads. These come from suspended particles in metals. If you have too many, you get black spots, to better adjust to get rid of them. Use a scalpel quality. Almost every spotting session I change the blade with a new one to buy much. Of course, you do not want to make a hole in the print media, so stay light. Of time to pause, put a small piece of tissue paper in place and, with the back of your fingernail, just gently stroke to push the fibers of the paper raised down. Use paper as easy Crane, as recommended earlier.

Handmade materials, such as Gämpi, have very long fiber, which means they are very difficult to etch. Some printers use white pigment to cover the location and use of water colors to bring up the now white with the right density. After having tried with disastrous results, I prefer to burn them. If you ruin a print, please do not. Keep them for practice, or in the future, you can experience something new. For example right now I'm testing a glossy varnish, some time ago I attempted hand color toning, etc.

Assembly.

Assembly requires first a sheet of acid free watercolor paper (45lbs/96gsm) to the corners. Just get a pad A4 at local art shop and after cutting the leaves into 1 / 2 "strips bend and cut corners to make four simple. You will be using acid free tape to stick over the mounting panel. Here in Europe we have a wonderful bunch of free acid called PH7 is self-adhesive and easy to remove with a hair dryer. You do not want to buy one you have to wet to become tacky or very expensive type of cotton. I cut a 2 "piece of tape, then cut into two strips and apply more than two corners, so with 4" you are four corners. The mounting panel is of course a very personal choice. I use Colormount Museum 100% cotton with an ivory white hue, this board is well my impressions.

Should you sell or display your prints mounted and bevel window matted on? Always! Do not sell (and even less show gallery) dismantled an impression. The first reason is because it gives a bad image and cheap. Secondly, because you do not know how nor will the customer it is mounted. Third, because the viewer will see the black borders (of strokes), which as already said to destroy areas shadow in the image. I can not believe there are printers who prefer brushed borders shown - that part of the process anyway and not the actual image - just to show that the paper is coated by hand, so precious? I see no other reason). Fourth, because you have to sign the print itself, but you will also sign and probably the number on the mount just below the press, and the back support will also signed and possibly have a stamp with the relevant information such as date etc., since we use the tabbed mounting corners, printing will easy to remove the mountain, if that becomes necessary. The two parts, assembly and installation, will be centered on one side with the same acid free tape. The frame can not be closed with adhesives or other techniques, to allow easy access to print for inspection and removal, should something happen to the mountain.

The frame size is also important. For transit, presentation and storage printing up to 8x10 "must be mounted at least 13x15. This leaves borders around Nice with the advantage of a cost (you can do three assemblies complete with a full sheet), including a reduction in postage cost too much if you sell mail order.

Personally, if I know the artwork will be framed and hung, I try to offer him mounted 16x20 "(for a 8x10") because a larger assembly greatly improves the aesthetic quality and value of an impression (though I know that print will be framed I usually print a little lighter too). I use a simple Excel spreadsheet to help you calculate the boundaries at assembly. I usually have a PC near my area of supervision, with both Photoshop and Excel loaded during the editing session. Of This way I can quickly verify the exact negative (print) size with Photoshop and Excel to calculate the correct boundaries for cutting.

No need to mention, of course, you will use a pencil (not ink) to sign and date your feedback, and editing. If you want to write more details such as name and print your own details, do not use stickers on the back of the mountain, they turn yellow and fall off after a relatively short period and should be avoided. If you do not have a stamp (with alcohol-based ink that dries immediately) it Just use a pencil.

Each print must have its own certificate of authenticity. In it you will give details on materials, medium, date, editioning and any other relevant information such as warranty or details about yourself if you want. Something simple like this perhaps:

... Followed by your signature, website, etc.

Many photographers I know also attach a separate document with a brief summary about themselves, so the last shows I also saw others, including a short note to explain process.

When you're finished editing, you can finally sign, date and number (if you're editioning) your artwork. Finishing Touches (After a final thorough inspection) is a sheet of acid free paper or vellum over some other burning (under the window bevel) continue to protect, and clear polystyrene for safe transit and wrap the "gift" look. When I ship, I use 3mm MDF sheet cut advice to size to wrap up the prints, they work very well, even when shipping overseas and your customers will receive a good impression, even before looking at the work itself. (Hint: cut strips of 1 inch foam core and adapt them around the impression. If the packaging contains more copies of a framed print or just cut more tape and stack). My personal statistics: when mounted on 13x15 "The risk of damage, where you ship, is nearly zero. When mounted on 16x20" I had some slight damage (corners bent, etc.) several times over several years, so not bad. With larger dimensions than that, I tried once two 24x28 "prints and they are seriously damaged, so now I stick with smaller prints for sale online.

Final thoughts on the editing and presentation: Unfortunately, beautiful prints ruined by poor delivery, cheap panel mounting or poor cutting technique are not so rare. I saw prints mounted with corner tabs cheap plastic and displays even recorded directly on the corners with tape together. I also received copies wrapped in cardboard used with dish soap ads on it. Care as that used in photography and printing needs be applied to the final stage of the process too.

Framework.

Covering framing detail beyond the scope of this article I can not, however, give some advice. First, many artists prefer to leave the game for the framer framing local, think that it something of a science, or who need special equipment. I would advise that for the same reasons mentioned during assembly. It is not true that you have to invest heavily in materials for framing. I only use two different aluminum frames (dark brown and black finishing very simple and minimal). These can normally be purchased pre-cut framing by suppliers (to cut aluminum moldings requires industrial machinery) and minimum quantities are usually quite low. The only thing you have to do is to calculate how many meters you need Depending on your chosen dimensions, in my case, for example, these are 13x15 "and 16x20".

Aluminum frames look like Nielsen is good, is perfect art prints, and of course are acid-free and eternal. Frame assembly provided with the equipment only takes a few minutes. To finish the course I use 5mm foam core to the back panel, and acrylic, which has the advantage of being unbreakable for the safe and easy to handle and cut glass (although more expensive and prone to scratches, but again it does not horrible greenish glass). A knife and a screwdriver are the only tools you need to frame.

If you get a price list from a supplier of coaching, you will notice that the final price of a 16x20 "frame is less than you think (about 06.05 U.S. dollars per meter - you need two feet to make a 16x20" frame - plus a sheet of backing board and one of acrylic, or less than $ 15 for a complete image) and a good opportunity to make additional profits on the sale of newspapers, much less the advantage of doing the job yourself in minutes.

Part 7 / 7 will discuss the sale of your work and last words.
