Reflecting on how my novel is Worth

Yesterday I had an interesting discussion with some members on the forum Amazon Kindle the list price of my book.

It all started when I wrote a post inviting readers to Amazon Kindle book. I included the synopsis, price list, and a link to the page of my book. I thought at best get a few answers, and maybe (but probably not) a few sales. What I did not expect was a member to write back to tell me that if my book looked interesting, she would not buy it if I put my price down $ 2.00, or preferably to 0.99 cents.

My novel sells for $ 4.95. With the automatic discount from Amazon, it falls to $ 3.96. My profit for each download equals $ 1.73 - roughly the same amount of money I would do from a royalty on a book printed.

I think this is a fair and reasonable price, but other members wrote to try to persuade me to drop the price to 0.99 cents. It was even said that because I was an "unknown" author, I had to do what I can give them a chance to give me a chance. Although most members agreed.

Suddenly, I had a small group of readers saying they wanted to read my book, but not less I dropped the price to 0.99 cents. Because I'm not a household name, and because I have not yet received a review on Amazon my book, my effort for them was not worth more than a dollar.

Maybe after a few people had bought, read, and it considered, I might think about increasing the price again. "Give U.S. a chance to give you a chance," And they told me. " If you do not drop the price, but keep it at the price you think it's worth, you will not sell many books. You could win a readership, but at a much slower pace. "

So I dropped the price to 0.99 cents. I thought, well, I think four years of work worth more than that, but still When the market says different. At least people are willing to buy at this price. At least I'll have a few readers.

Then I told my husband, who is also a writer, what I did. He was furious.

"You devalue your art," he said. And: "You just set your own value as.

It was a heated debate. At first I thought he was wrong. I told him I was just listening to the market. "I do not care about money, I just want readers!" I said.

Then I went to class stretching. Sitting on my mat on a beautiful floor that had just been polished and smelled wonderful. The song "Return to Innocence" was played on stereo. A little girl opened the door, seated on the stage, and saw our class and stretch and breathe slowly and reach out. "What a beautiful scene," I said. And: "I should write about it."

It was when I paid costs EUR 5 per week that I started to feel anger - the same anger, my husband thought that I had done. What he had earlier started to make sense. He clicked. I had intentionally devalued my job. I dropped my value slot.

When I returned from the class of stretching, I wrote this post on the original thread:

After a pause computer and a wonderful hour stretching class ("reach these arms, girls, handy!") I decided to retain the original list price of $ 3.96.

What you wrote - that if an author who sets the price accordingly to what it believes it is worthwhile, then it would eventually build a readership at a slower pace - makes perfect sense to me. Long ago I realized that I will not make a ton of money on my art, but I think it's important not to devalue just so I can have a quick readership.

Of course I want people to read my book. Of course, I want feedback. But - oh, I do not know - when I think about my novel price to 99 cents, I get this vision in my head of those 1-dollar stores inside shopping malls in the suburbs. I get chills when I think of my book sitting alongside ray flowers, plastic tape, packaging combs, shoelaces, fat scented candles, coffee filters and nail polish at low prices.

Then I think of all the other writers who are fighting there. I think of years, their blood and guts and tears as they write their work. What do we do? If I, and all the other writers out there, books price to near zero, then what does say about us as a group? I think said we are ready and willing to be devalued. This is our art, whether it is created by a master or a hobbyist, not worth more than a box of Kleenex or a bottle of bright pink nail polish. I'm not ready to sign for that theory - at least not yet.

I received an answer to this question. It has not been favorable. Consequently, no one bought the book.
