Grit Sandpaper

How To Properly Use Sandpaper
What is sandpaper and how is it used? What is the proper way to use sandpaper? Professional contractors and home improvement do-it-yourselfers use sandpaper to level, smooth, sharpen, polish, shape, and finish wood, drywall seams, window panes, and a variety of other objects. The sandpaper removes a small quantity of material at a time from an object (such as an outer layer of paint).
In the past sandpaper was made of actual grains of sand that were glued onto a paper backing. Today, actual grains of sand are not used. It is now composed of garnet, silicon carbide, and aluminum oxide.
There are many different types (grades) of sandpaper for different jobs. You will need to choose the proper type for the specific project you will be working on. Smaller number grades are more coarse and remove more material with each stroke. The higher numbers are more fine and remove less material with each pass. Here are a few tips for getting the best possible finish.
First, you will need to decide just how much sanding is required for your project. If the object's surface is relatively smooth already, go with a higher grade (grit) paper. The 100-grit should work well. If the object is dented or very rough, choose a heavier (coarse) paper (50-60-grit).
You can do the actual sanding by wrapping the paper around a sanding block or by holding the sandpaper against the object with the tips of your fingers. Next, simply begin moving the paper back and forth over the object's surface. If you are sanding wood, make sure to move the paper in the direction of the grain. This will help to avoid making scratches in the wood. Never use excessive force and continue sanding until the surface is mostly smooth and level.
Assuming you started with a more coarse paper you will now move on to a finer grit. Go ahead and continue sanding until the surface feels smooth on your fingertips. If you need to you can use an even finer grit (120), but sand very lightly. You should continue this process until the surface feels smooth as glass.
Lastly, wipe the surface clean with a tack cloth and inspect for any imperfections. If you find any you can continue to sand using the 120-grit paper.
