Both wax and gel candles are made with an oil base but the only difference between wax and gel, is that gel candles are made from mineral oil mixed with polymer resin -- a powder that solidifies when mixed with mineral oil.

 1. Gel. That's the most important thing you'll ever need. Gels are essentially the same. The only difference between gels is the density. Gels come in low, medium and high density.

Here are some facts about the different densities of gel. Low density gel is also known as CLP grade. It flows and melts the easiest but the consistency is not thick enough to sustain your embed materials. Also, it can only hold approximately 3% fragrance oil since it has reduced polymer quantity. But this doesn't mean that CLP grade is useless at all. Of course not! If you are making a gel candle with little or no scent then you can use CLP grade.

Then there is Medium density, also known as the CMP grade. Medium density gels are probably the most widely used. It can hold up to 4% fragrance and can hold your embed materials pretty well because it has medium polymer quantity. If your embeds are light then this is a good gel to use. In addition, this kind of candle can melt and pour easily.

So what if I want to make strong scented candles and heavier embed materials, what grade will I be using? Don't forget that you still have one density candle left. And this density gel will answer your question. The High Density candle, also known as the CHP grade can hold up to 5% of fragrance and hold your embeds strongly because it has a high polymer quantity.

2. Zinc wicks. Zinc wicks are used in making gel candles because cotton wicks are known to absorb more gel. Though cotton wicks are cheaper, it is still not the best choice when making these candles. If you invest in zinc wicks, you can get absolutely stunning results since zinc wicks will not absorb the gel and it will efficiently burn from top to bottom.

3. Liquid color dye. It is so boring if your gel candle is just colored with white. To bring life and creativity to your creation, you can add some liquid color dyes.
One word of caution though. Make sure that it is not flammable since you will be using heat when making your gel candles.

Use a dropper when you add liquid color dye. Using a dropper will enable you to come up with a mixture that is precisely proportioned which is very useful if you need to reproduce a candle with the same color shade. Let your creative juices flow as you mix colors.

4. Fragrance oils. Add some fragrance oils that are relaxing, stress free and can give a soothing sensation when you light your candle. There are a lot of supplies in the market. Manufacturers and suppliers recommend fragrance with a flash point of 200 degrees. When adding fragrance, make sure it complements the kind of density gel you are using and make sure that it is not flammable.

5. Embeds. Embeds are decorative materials usually placed at the bottom of the gel candle. There are different kinds of embeds you can use when you are making your gel candle.
One is the glass embed. Glass embeds are crafted by hand with special tools to form a glass art like fish, see creatures, animals and alike.

Another is wax embed. Wax embeds are like glass embeds as it uses wax to form an art. And the last kind is the natural embed. Natural embeds came from nature (from the word 'natural') such as shells, pebbles, crystals and the like.
