How to Trim Your Newborn's Nails
If you are like myself and most moms, you are probably wondering how to trim your baby’s nails! It’s very natural to be nervous about trimming your baby’s nails for the first time due to the fact that your baby may squirm around a lot and her fingers are really tiny and small. Your baby’s nails grow extremely fast and if they are left untrimmed for too long they may scratch her cute little face (or yours)! Trimming your baby’s nails does take some practice. Here are some mommy tips to help you begin to trim your child’s nails safely:
Trim your baby’s nails while she is sleeping:
Trimming your baby’s nails while she is sleeping is easier as she won’t be squirming around and you can get them trimmed without waking her.
Trimming with a Baby Nail File:
Trimming your baby’s nails with a nail file is less intimidating then using a baby nail clipper, it is also safer when trimming your baby’s nails for the first time.
Trim Baby’s Nails after Bathtime:
Your baby's nails are usually softer and easier to cut after taking a bath.
If your baby is trying to grab the nail clipper or nail file from your hand you can distract her with a toy to occupy her free hand. Remember to use baby nail clippers and a baby nail file as her hand is too tiny and small for adult nail clippers. Adult nail clippers may also clip the top of her tiny fingers. Remember to also ask for help, perhaps daddy can help distract baby while holding a toy as you clip baby’s nails or you can ask your caregiver or friend to help you.
Remember that it if you give your baby an ‘oopsie’, that many moms have done this. Apply ointment after bleeding has stopped and apply a clean cloth to the affected area. Do not use a band-aid as baby’s are naturally curious and may try to take the band-aid off.
