Hello i have a patio where I have a lot of pot plants last spring, they all almost died this year?

what are the best plant to plant all year I like greens and flowers My terrace a little sunshine in the afternoon and early morning the rest of the day its shadow. before spring begins, I want to start planting. I use mix moisture control potting. Any suggestions how to save my plants from dying and keep them fresh all year. I also want to plant fruit and vegetables can be grown in pots and what kind. In addition, all my pots are made of clay and some are plastic and ceramic. which are best for optimal flow of air and I use plastic sheets at the bottom of my pots for my compost does not run when I water. First - Choose flowers and vegetables, fruits that your sun exposure.
