Get Past Writer's Block With These Seven Creative Strategies
Writer's block attacks when you least expect it. You might be happily writing your next book, article, or press release and then suddenly you are stuck. Writer's block prevents you from finishing or sometimes from starting a written work. It can interrupt your progress or prevent you getting started altogether. Sometimes special tips and tricks can help you to beat this writing indecision. Consider these suggestions on how to get back on track with your writing.
Remember – writer's block can sneak up when you've been writing prolifically or even when you've been in a writing slump for quite some time. Getting out of a mental block is different for everyone. If one method doesn't seem to work for you, move onto the next. Here are a few ideas to help you break out of writer's block.

Try a different kind of writing. If you normally write books, try writing a short article, a love song, a poem, a greeting card, or something else out of character for you. Change up what you are writing by trying a different writing type or writing style altogether.

Read something instead. Sometimes you can get a great deal of inspiration from something that you read. You can find inspiration for writing in a wide variety of places, from poetry to love letters to books, magazine articles, and more.
- Do something artistic. Sculpt, paint, draw, or take an art class to try something more complex. Get the other creative parts of your brain working again and it might just stimulate your brain to kick out the writer's block before you know it.
- Have a new experience. Go out and do something you've never done before, try a new type of cuisine, or find another brand new activity to try.
- Try exercise or meditation. Sometimes you just need to free yourself from whatever is holding you back. Exercise like yoga, dance, or Pilates should help you to break away from the mental block.
- Play some word games to get the juices flowing. You can play something like Scrabble, Boggle, or Taboo, or even try some crossword puzzles or word finds.
- Take some time off. When all else fails, you might just need a little break from writing. If you take some time away – whether it's a few days or just a few hours – you may recharge your batteries and refresh your mind sooner than you'd think.
If you can't take time off and none of these other techniques are working for you, just start writing. It may take you longer, but you can push through the writer's block and get the job done. Then go back later to polish it up and improve on any parts of your story that you feel need some embellishment. These are just a few ideas to help you get rid of writer's block.
Everyone is different, so you might have to try a few different anti writer's block techniques until you find the one that works for you. Remember, if you are unable to break away from the writer's block syndrome, you can surely take some time off from writing (unless you have approaching deadlines to meet) and try to give yourself a break altogether.
