Oil Painting Vs Acrylics
Oil paint consists of pigment particles suspended in a drying oil, and takes much longer to dry compared to other types of paint. Acrylic paint is a paint that contains pigment suspended in an emulsion polymer acrylic with an additional quality quick drying. Acrylic paint, even after being diluted with water, becomes resistant to Water when dry. Acrylic and oil painting require different lengths of time to dry. Oils take relatively more time to dry, usually several weeks, depending on the ingredients used. It because the oils are not subjected to the same evaporation process as water does when exposed to air. Rather, painting oil oxidizes into a dry solid. This property causes oil paint to dry very slowly, giving time to the artist to mix the colors and adjust the final product.
On the other hand, acrylic paint is the choice of those artists who believe in quick results, since only a few hours to dry the paint. However, a more slowly drying acrylic paint has been developed by Golden Artist Colors in 2008, which combines the qualities of acrylic paint with the longer drying time of oil painting, painting to stay wet for a few more hours on the canvas in normal conditions.
When we use oil paint, we need a solvent such as turpentine for thinning paint and cleaning the work area, which has its drawbacks, because the turpentine has toxic qualities. Acrylic is generally more flexible in nature to use for the average artist, but because of its faster drying time, the painter is not able to blend colors or use the technique of wet on wet at the disposal of oil painting. Retarders can be added acrylic paint to slow the drying process, allowing water to be added to make the painting more realistic.
